Pool Safety For Dogs

Magnet and Muffy.... The Happy Mutts Blog

If you have a dog who loves to take a dip in a pool here are some pool safety tips that I have compiled. We used to have a pool in our backyard so I know first-hand the perils and pleasures that pools are for dogs who love the water.

1.  Not All Dogs Love the Water!  If your dog is fearful or apprehensive, please don't force him or her to go in the water!  It will only stress out the dog and make it fear the water even more.  I have seen stupid pet owners throw their dogs in the pool with a "sink or swim" mentality.  So please respect your dog's boundaries and understand that he or she may be just as content sitting out and observing.

2. Pool Decks Get Hot!  Be mindful that pool decks get hot! For dogs this can burn their paw pads. So keep them off hot decks and in the cool grass or lay a towel out for them.

3. Don't Let Them Drink the Pool Water! Plain and simple, if your dog ingests the chlorine and chemical laden water he will get sick. Keep fresh drinking water for your dog near the pool. This goes for salt water pools as well. Too much salt is toxic for dogs. Signs of salt poisoning include initial vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, stumbling, excessive thirst or urination, tremors and seizures.

4. Be Aware of Heat Stroke!  Dogs like us humans are susceptible to the heat.  Be aware of the symptoms of heat exhaustion including lethargy, excessive drooling, foaming at the mouth, etc.

5. Supervise Your Dog! as you would children.  Monitor your dog's exercise as some dogs tire quickly or simply do not know when too stop.  Not all dogs are natural swimmers. So use a dog life vest jacket from One Sassy Dog to improve their buoyancy and make them easy to spot!.

Have fun this summer and stay safe!

Dog Games to Keep Your Dog Mentally Fit

Magnet and Muffy.... The Happy Mutts Blog

Dogs love to play! And playing with your dog is great way to bond with your dog, develop a long-lasting trusting relationship and help nurture their natural instincts.  Healthy play keeps your dog physically and mentally challenged and also fulfilled and less likely to be destructive or anxious.

Simple play like throwing a tennis ball or frisbee in the park or chasing sticks in the water burn up energy. Dogs just love to run and chase things, it is in their nature.   Chasing after a ball or playing hide and seek can teach obedience skills like "Sit" and "Stay" but it also allows your dog to exercise his or her "nose"! A dog's nose is his or her's most powerful sense and there are dog games that have been specifically developed to exercise your dog mentally and allow our dog to exercise his sense of smell.

We have put together a list of top-notch Dog Games to challenge your dog mentally and entertain him or her at the same time!

1. Agility and Obstacle Course Dog Games -  Interactive game for you and your dog.  A positive learning experience that builds a bond and trust between you and your dog.
2.  Slo-Bowl® Slow Feeder - Promotes dog food play and healthy eating habits. The Slo-Bowl is a natural, healthy, and playful solution for dogs that gobble their kibble too quickly. Our nature-inspired designs promote natural eating habits by requiring dogs to forage for their feasts.
Dogs quickly learn to “chase” their food through the maze of ridges and valleys, making dinnertime feel more like a hunt. And, because the Slo-Bowl “rewards” their play with bits of food, furry friends become more and more engaged as the meal goes on.

3.  The Tail Teaser -  Provide a fun and disciplined outlet for your dog's natural hunting instinct with the Tail Teaser game.

4. Dog Puzzle Games -  Dog Games® Puzzle Toys challenge dogs and stimulate their senses – it’s boredom busting, mental exercise for your pooch!

Tips on How to Enjoy the Great Outdoors with Your Dog

Magnet and Muffy... The Happy Mutts Blog

For many of us our dogs are our family members and when we head out for a hike or a weekend of camping our canine companions come along for the fun.  Part of the pleasure of being outdoors is watching our dogs experience it with us.  Watching tails wag excitedly as they splash in creek or swim in the ocean or run freely in a field always brings a smile to my face!

However, in bringing your dog along for a hike or camping trip safety and their well-being should be primary consideration.  Fortunately there are some great Dog Outdoor Gear and Dog Travel Accessories that have been designed with safety and comfort in mind.

Here are some tips for how to enjoy the great outdoors with your dog this summer.

1. Health Check. Make sure your dog is up to date on all vaccinations and boosters and make a copy of the certificate and bring it along with you. Be sure to bring along any medication for you dog that is prescribed, be up to date on your Heartworm medication, and I also bring along a bottle of doggy buffered aspirin because dogs can get aches and pains to from a long day on the trails. Also stock up on flea and tick products if you are going to be in a area prone to either pests.

2. Microchip.  Microchip your dog and have him or her registered. No one wants to imagine a lost dog scenario but insuring that he or she can be identified is an easy thing to do!

3. Car Travel.  Consider purchasing a Dog Travel Harness for your dog to keep your dog safe and a dog car hammock or cover to keep your dog comfortable and your car clean!

4. Dog Gear Packing List.  Luckily there are a variety of durable and functional dog gear products to make your dog's time outdoor enjoyable and safe!

The Love of a Dog

Magnet and Muffy…The Happy Mutts Blog

Anyone who is on the receiving end of unconditional doggy love is blessed.  Yes so my house may be cluttered with doggy beds and doggy toys and doggy treats but I would not trade it for anything in this world.  When you have had a bad day and everything that could possibly go wrong, goes wrong, your dog(s) can just sense that you need an extra "hug" or wag of the tail.

Dogs wear their emotions on a sleeve and it is pretty easy to see when they are scared or sad or conversely happy and excited.  We had the chance to attend the SPCA Pet Fair to support pet adoption.  Dogs of all shapes and sizes and colors joined their humans for a 2.5 mile walk lead by Champ, a dog that was rescued under terrible circumstances but was smiling and happy like a true Champ!

Here are some of the happy faces we saw at the fair and testament to the fact that dogs just want to be with us!!  So here is to the good people who love dogs and the dogs who love them!
And it is okay to spoil them! From One Sassy Dog!

Dogs Just Want to Have Fun!

Magnet and Muffy…The Happy Mutts Blog

Spring Is Finally Here!
It took long enough! I know we all want to get out and enjoy some well deserved outside time with our dogs.  We might have gone out with them in the winter, but it wasn’t very enjoyable for us or them!  Now we can take those leisurely walks and bike rides.   A great way to go on a bike ride with your dog is to use the Tagalong Pet Bicycle Basket. They are stylish and they let you take your dog on those spring bike rides. For those of us with bigger dogs  ( up to 165 lbs) the Comfort Wagon Bicycle Pet Trailer is just the thing. And when you get to your destination the pet trailer even converts to a pet house with easy wheel removal!

How about a nice hike with your dog?  Good exercise for us, a great day out, and your dog will love the time with you!  A great idea is a dog back pack, now both you and your dog can do the carrying!  The Outward Hound Dog Back Packs are just the thing.

Getting Ready for Spring!

Well it has been a long, cold rough winter!  I know I have cabin fever, and so do my dogs Muffy and Magnet!  We need some spring weather to get us going again.  Springtime reminds me of nice leisurely walks with the dog, and of course getting the garden going again.  Always lifts the spirits.  Getting ready to plant the early spring vegetables, lettuce, onions and radishes.  This spring there will be a new addition to our flower garden.  A beautiful hand crafted dog topiary.  We ordered a beautiful mossed German Shepherd, and it will be featured right in the middle of the garden.  The mossed topiaries are great for planting.  We will plant some beautiful flowers right in the moss, and watch them grow all year.  At the end of the year, just peel off the moss, and next year will just add more moss to the frame, and start again.
Now walking the dogs in winter is not the easiest for me  Muffy or Magnet!  All kinds of snow and ice, just makes it more of a chore.  But with the warmer weather, I look forward to the exercise for all of us.  There are so many great new leashes/collars/harnesses on the market.  I have found that a harness is the best, easy to control the dog, and easier on the dog period!  Now some dogs a leash and collar are fine, easy to walk, that’s how it is with Muffy.  But Magnet has a lot more energy, and still likes to pull a bit.  With a harness she not choking herself when she gets a bit rambunctious! Just makes for a stress free walk for both of us.
Our dogs are great friends and companions!  What would we do without them?!  So I try my best to give them all the love attention, and yes spoil them a bit whenever I can.  Part of that is making sure you do the best for them.  That’s why I started One Sassy Dog.  I go through 1000’s of products to bring you the best, popular, and most innovative ones.  And most are Muffy and Magnet approved!

Keeping Our Dogs Warm

It’s a great time of year for dogs!  They all seem to love the snow, but it’s also a very dangerous time for our dogs too. With this recent “Polar Vortex” thing going on, I have read about dogs that are left outside without the proper protection, and they suffer terribly.  I remember an episode of Animal Cops Detroit where a dog owner left his Lab outside in horrifically cold weather and the dog almost died.  Warnings go out all the time about cold weather and dogs.

There are some things you can do.  Make sure to let your dog back in the house after a few minutes.  You can get your dog a sweater, like this Paul Frank Julius sweatshirt featuring Julius the Monkey.  Or a beautiful Apple Hoodie.  Your dogs will look super stylish, and you can take them out for a nice long winter walk!  Even bundled up though, make sure to get you and your dog back into a nice warm house!

I hope everyone is having a great winter!  I know Muffy and Magnet are, they bring enough snow back with them into the house, that’s for sure!
