Dogs and Their Car Rides!

I recently posted an article on “Happy Dogs Hanging out of Cars” And while they were great pictures, and the dogs looked like they were having a great time, in truth it is very dangerous for both dogs and humans.  I can’t tell you how many times I have seen dogs hanging out of windows, and I just cringe.  My grandfather used to have his toy poodle on his lap driving on the NYS Thruway on his way to Roscoe NY!
We all want our dogs to be happy and enjoy themselves as much as possible.  There are ways for our dogs to have fun and be safe on their car rides.  A good way to give your dog freedom to move is to use the Kurgo Car Barrier.  It will give your dog the freedom to move  in the back seat while protecting the driver.  Another great product is the Kurgo Zip Line.  Again your dog can move around in the back seat, and be in a safety harness.
We love to take our dogs on car rides.  Whether they are quick trips around the corner, long drives to the park or taking them on vacation, we need to keep them and us safe and sound!

Dogs are Family

Dogs are so much a part of our life and I am happy to see that dog products have evolved to recognize them as a cherished member of our family.  Take dog crates, for example.  Unwelcoming wire cage or plastic crates are being replaced with dog crates that are crafted like fine furniture

Dogs being part of the family means that more and more dogs are traveling in cars and on vacation with us. In fact, an estimated 29 million people said that they traveled with their pets in the last 3 years. And did you know that dogs are by far the more popular traveling companion, they beat cats by a 78% to 15% margin (and rabbits and ferrets came in third!).  To keep our pets safe when riding in cars, a variety of pet car safety seat products have hit the market.  You can browse our large selection of Dog Cart Seats at OneSassyDog.com.

And finally, each dog should have his own dog toy bin to store all those balls, frisbees and stuffed animals!

Dogs, Our Heroes!

You can hardly pick up the newspaper and not read about how a dog has saved someone’s life.  Whether it is from a house fire, from another animal attacking a family member, scaring off a prowler, etc.   Dogs have been saving humans from all kinds of trouble for millennia.   A few dogs have recently been highlighted in an article I found, and I would like to share them with you.
First one is Sgt Stubby, a Boston Terrier that helped the 102nd Infantry in WW1.  He was smuggled into the war, and served nobly throughout.  Here is the article and picture of Sgt Stubby. http://www.mandatory.com/2013/11/06/the-weirdest-soldiers-of-all-time/7
The second is a Bamse, a Saint Bernard, who served on the coastal patrol vessel Thorodd during WW2.  Bamse was an inspiration to all who sailed with him — during firefights, the brave dog would position himself on the boat’s front gun tower wearing a specially crafted metal helmet to protect him from bullets. His acts of valor are numerous, including saving a crew mate’s life by pushing a knife-wielding attacker into the sea. When he died in 1944, he was buried with full military honors.  Here is the full article and picture of Bamse. http://www.mandatory.com/2013/11/06/the-weirdest-soldiers-of-all-time/5
And here is a wonderful link about dog mascots in the Civil War.  The 11th Pa Infantry regiments mascot was Sallie. Sallie is memorialized at the 11th Pennsylvania monument erected at Gettysburg!!  http://alexandriava.gov/historic/fortward/default.aspx?id=40198#2
What exceptional and special dogs they were, but aren’t all of our dogs heroes in one way or the other.  Some of our dogs are service dogs, helping us live better lives helping us cope.  Some of our dogs guard and protect our families, making us feel safe.  Some of our dogs are just good company, better in fact than other humans sometimes.  Some dogs make us laugh, make our families closer, make our home lives bearable. And all dogs love us unconditionally, which is the greatest gift of all.
So when you come home from work, the store, or just come back from a visit with friends, you will find your dog patiently waiting for you by the door.  Make sure to give your hero a big hug.  They deserve it!

Keeping Our Dogs Healthy

Reading all the articles about dogs dying and getting sick from jerky treats made in China got me to thinking what I can do for Magnet and Muffy to keep them as healthy as possible.  We all know that keeping our dogs as active as possible makes them happy and healthy dogs!  It keeps us just as happy and healthy too!  But we need to do more to keep our cherished friends happy and healthy.

When I was growing up you played with your dog, walked your dog, fed your dog, and when you felts something was wrong you brought your dog to the vet.  Now we have to be a lot more proactive, and as I research more about dog care, see comments on Instagram, and talk with other dog owners I see there is so much more to it!

Make sure to clean your dog’s food bowl after every feeding.  Even if you feed your dog a straight dry food diet (like we do, though they sure get enough meat scarps from the table, that’s another story for another time! LOL) you need to clean that bowl and don’t forget the water bowl too!  Brushing your dog’s teeth is essential as is giving your dog the right kind of dog treats and bones!  They will help keep their teeth and breath clean!  All essential for a dog’s health.

Make sure to schedule your dog for a vet visit a least once a year.  Just like us they need their yearly checkups!  Keep a list of shots and when they need them updated.  If you live in an area where lyme disease is a problem don’t forget their shots, and keep up with their heart worm medicine.  Dog supplements are a great thing too, and are being recommended more and more by vets.  Our dogs are beloved family members, like children. They need the same attention!

Meliteo Kinidio

Magnet and Muffy…The Happy Mutts Blog

While Muffy and Magnet are both healthy and active, Muffy is getting up in age.  She is 13+ years old, and I can tell she is slowing down with certain things.  I’m still finding out things about Muffy, the most exciting is I was able to identify her breed, thanks to some friendly folks who came up to me on one of our walks.  They happened to have a dog just like Muffy, and when they saw her they ran right over asking all sorts of questions.  They actually adopted their dog a few months after we adopted Muffy, and we both got our companions from North Shore Animal League on Long Island, NY.  They were able to tell me her breed.  She is a Meliteo Kinidio, a small Greek dog breed, an ancient loyal and loving breed.  Such exciting news!
Our Muffy
A Meliteo Kinidio
Muffy is a very special dog, she has brought so much happiness and joy to our house.  We love her crazy quirks, and she makes us all so happy.  That’s why seeing her age is so difficult.  She is a bit hard of hearing now, so when she is lying down, I make sure she sees me coming, otherwise she jumps up suddenly when she realizes someone is there.  She sleeps a lot, very sound sleep, and more than once I have approached her dreading that she wasn’t sleeping at all.  I pet her gently and she slowly wakes up, stretches and goes about her business, either back to sleep, or outside to bark at the same thing Magnet is barking at, usually nothing I can see…LOL  Her eyes sight is failing a bit too, she doesn’t see the snack I toss to her sometimes, but her nose is still good, and she finds it, especially when Magnet is hovering around!  But like some people we all know, there are times I swear her eye sight is 20/20 and her hearing is perfect..Like when I try to sneak in my room with some cookies or crackers, or a sandwich, well she sure as heck sees me and hears me then.  She loves going for walks, though by the end of the walk her troublesome front leg bothers her, and she limps a bit on the way home, but always with a wagging tail, and wanting to walk more!
I try to give Muffy some extra attention whenever possible.  I dread the day when Muffy will no longer be with us.  So no matter what your dogs age is, give them a little extra TLC when you can, you know they will return it 10 fold!
